James gave Bessie the diary on March 5th, so the entries before that were not written on the day. She actually jumps around a bit throughout the diary. Sometimes she notes it and sometimes she doesn’t.

Bessie uses first initials often instead of familiar people’s full names. This is her son, Harley Leroy, who she calls Roy or R and her husband, James or J.

Bessie makes most of the family’s clothes, including her dresses, clothes for the children, and night shirts for James. He does buy a suit for himself and one point.

Bessie often starts her entries by noting the temperature and the weather. She uses “a” when a temperature is above freezing and “b” when a temperature is below freezing. She also often notes the weather in the morning on the far left of the entry and then notes the weather in the afternoon or evening on the far right of the entry.

Her sisters, Carrie and Belle, and Belle’s daughter Anna.

Obviously, there were no motorized busses at this time. When she refers to the “buss,” she means horse cars or cable cars. Cable cars were steam-powered and costly to build, so St Paul only had 2 lines before they upgraded to electric cars in 1888. Buss, with two “ss,” is a dead word referring to any of these.

The 30th: She continues this thought over the next few days, although she wasn’t writing it in January. She notes that she was writing it in May

Bessie’s birthday and the day that she gets the diary.

P is her 1-year-old daughter Pearle.

Spelled “Liedertafel.” I think this must have been torn down because I can’t find anything about a Liedertafel Hall in St. Paul now, although there is evidence of one in the early 1900s.

James often brings men to dinner and they sometimes stay overnight. Is this strange with his wife and two young children in the house?

Brady is a milkman

She always spells it “staid,” not stayed.

The Saint Paul Dispatch was a paper in St Paul from 1868-1985.

Her sisters, Katie and Belle

Her mother-in-law was named Arminda Leach and her sister Mary’s married name is Leach.

She is making a quilt! She also refers to it as her “rick rack” sometimes.

Her sister Carrie, Josephine Brewer, Joe’s daughter Mary, Joe’s husband John, and Eva, who I cant find. Eva comes up with the Brewer’s and with Carrie again, so she might belong to either of them.

Her sister, Hattie

The first code:

I am a little unyl

Bessie sometimes uses her code slightly wrong, and I have to make guesses. I think she meant “unwl,” as in “unwell.” She repeats something similar later.

I looked up this recipe. I think it has vanilla pudding, milk, graham crackers, and whipped topping.

This is total speculation… I drove by where Bessie and James lived in St Paul. The house that they lived in has been torn down now, but they were at the top of a hill. At the bottom, there is a crazy intersection with 5 roads, none of them straight, and a grouping of shops. I wonder if this was where the saloon was. It would be “down,” like Bessie says, and would be within easy walking distance.

A hackney- kind of horse carriage

She makes comments like this often that are kinda sweet and kinda sarcastic. I think she really loves him, but is also sarcastic about her situation with him. How else could she cope?

He does this cycle of abuse shit… he doesn’t come home, then sends her a present. Doesn’t come home, and then promises to quit drinking and going out. Doesn’t come home and then buys a gift for one of the children...

It seems that this behavior runs in the family. After Bessie died, Retta and John got divorced. Maybe she was miserable too.

She mentions that she didn’t nurse Pearle, like this is rare. Meaning, to me, that she is still nursing Pearle regularly.

I my catamenia did not appear.

I had to google catamenia- blood and other matter discharged from the uterus at menstruation.

Fascinating how she writes that she can’t think if anything else to write, and then says her period is late in code. She is afraid that James is going to read it. I think that this is still too early to be the pregnancy that kills her, but it is interesting that she is thinking and worrying about her period being on time.

The bottom line was written in pencil and has faded. Bessie changes up her writing utensils and handwriting style a lot.

Instant tapioca, sugar, 1 egg, milk, and vanilla

“Ask for it:” What does this mean? It is in pencil like the entry above it, but on a new line.

Unyell

I think she used her code wrong again and meant “unwell”

She JUST weighed herself recently with Retta. Is she is in the hunt for signs of pregnancy. Still, I think it is too early.

I am real bad with my sickness

You can see how she gets her code wrong sometimes, but she corrects it here. I wish she would elaborate on her sickness.

I don’t know… Carrie’s daughter We never see her and the word “asylum” is written clearly, or I would doubt myself. The siblings that are deaf spent time at a special school, but they didn’t call it that. Plus, I think they are back in St Paul at this point in the day.

I am floyinh yet

She calls her period “flow” sometimes- I think she meant “flowing.” Still, the grammar doesn’t make sense… is she saying she is not flowing yet?

I flow a little

Through floy I took off cloth mar

K mar

I think this is the end of the coded sentence above. I’m not sure what “cloth mark” means, though. It is like she is fitting the code into spaces in the text later.

Money is a concern for the Dunklee’s. Bessie often talks about the money that J gives her or the money that he takes from her. I don’t think they are struggling too much (they can afford little luxuries like new hats, baby carriages, etc.), but she does mention how he is in debt and spends too much money.

Amazing to think about horses in the streets, and Bessie having hens, a horse, and a cow, right in the city of St. Paul. Like I said, I have been to where she lived and it seems crazy now.

I love how she is tracking how many teeth Pearle has. So sweet.

This comment comes so quickly with no explanation… why would he burn letters that he had written to her and that she had kept for years!? Did they have a fight or something? It sounds horribly abusive and mean.

I think Harry is the bulldog

She uses the word “alone” a lot, and with increasing frequency as the year goes on. When I think of Bessie, loneliness is always at the top of my mind.

They just killed the dog?! Jesus, this man is a monster! Bessie sounds unemotional about it, but she often does when upsetting things happen like when J burnt her letters, when her chickens die, and later after the dentist, so I don’t think her tone reflects her feelings.

He had said that he would get a man to help her, but he didn’t. She moved a coal stove herself. At this point, she is most certainly pregnant.

She wrote “5 weeks” above the date here. 5 weeks ago was the end of April when she started writing in code about not feeling well

Salesmen brought her a Singer sewing machine to try for the week.

Promise of the year (eye roll).

Bessie’s sister, Mary, and her 1-year-old daughter.

The Minnehaha Falls is a waterfall in a park right in downtown Minneapolis.

A detailed telling of his verbal abuse.

Could this be her brother, Hiram? The only record that I have of him is in the School for the Deaf in Wisconsin in 1880. I also suspect that he died before 1889. Maybe he was visiting her in 1886.

He went to see the fireworks without his family? I think that she means that, since they couldn’t see them at home from their hill top right in town, the fireworks couldn’t have been very exciting.

Heartbreaking- they extracted all of her upper teeth, except one.

Impression taken to make her a set of false teeth.

She is acting so busy for just having so many teeth removed.

Valentine Schwartz was described in the 1880 census as a “Pressman.” Could it be that someone from the press is coming to take them to court, in the way that we mean “court?” Bessie never mentions anything about legal trouble explicitly, except she does say that the Sheriff was at their house early in the year and mentioned J’s debt.

He is the worst… she just had all her upper teeth pulled and is pregnant (although, I don’t think he knows that), and he is still mad that she isn’t getting his dinner fast enough.

Mary Brewer

Gosh, I’m so sorry for her. How painful and sad that must have been.

Mannheimer Brothers Department Store

Where did he go? He has gone off in the past to Duluth and Minneapolis and she wasn’t concerned, but this is different. It seems like she doesn’t know when to expect him and he stays away for days and days.

These are actually the events of a week from now. The next week’s entries are not written in their correct dates. She explains a little, but it is still hard for me to understand.

Alone + pregnant?

Pregnant??? Yes

She is getting more desperate. She always kept track of his comings and goings and was sad that he wasn’t with her, but this is so different. Is it that she has concluded that she is, in fact, pregnant? It seems as though she hasn’t told him yet.

The Complaint (first stanza)

It is not that my lot is low,
That bids the silent tear to flow,
It is not grief that bids me moan,
It is that I am all alone.

As soon as he got home, shit got really bad. She either knew what was going on or had a feeling. What could he have told her?

Edna Browning; or, the Leighton Homestead: A Novel. Written by Mary Jane Holmes in 1872

He has gone off the rails now… he just got home from a long trip, he told her something awful, their daughter is sick enough that they call a doctor, and he is still out until all hours of the morning.

I think she started this entry, but then realized it was the wrong day and picked it up in the next section.

The 1886 elections occurred in the middle of Grover Cleveland’s term during the Third Party System to choose congress members.

Harvey Bartholomew was Retta’s father.

Her sister Mary’s married name is Leach, but I’m not sure who Frank is.

Does she mean that he bought a horse carriage for himself?

A kind of horse carriage
